Kindergarten:
Developing a love of books and stories
Our Kindergarten Library and Accelerated Reader students:
Encourage students to enjoy both fiction and nonfiction books
Assist students in choosing books based on their interests
Expose children to Caldecott Award-winning books
Develop good listening skills through read aloud story time
Develop students’ responsibility for returning library books each week
1st Grade:
Discovering the joy of reading independently, beginning wherever the child’s ability level is, through the use of the Accelerated Reader program
Our 1st grade Library and Accelerated Reader students:
Start using Accelerated Reader to choose appropriate books based on reading skill level
Continue being read to and reading with an adult as they develop their ability to read independently
Move students through their range as they develop vocabulary and show comprehension of material read.
Encourage students to ask the meaning and pronunciation of unfamiliar words
Build on organization skills and allow students to check out an increased number of books
